The Pen

A man works behind a hotel desk. He listens, decides, helps, remembers, records. Then the pen disappears. The next guest still receives a key. The book remains open.

A hotel lobby. Morning. A man behind the front desk.

He is doing nothing. He is available.

A guest approaches. The man looks up. The guest speaks. We do not hear it.

The man listens. He nods once. He turns to the wall behind him and runs a finger along a row of hooks. He stops at one, takes down a key, sets it on the counter, and turns it so the number faces the guest.

He lifts a pen from beside the register, opens the book, and writes.

The guest takes the key and goes.

A second guest, with a suitcase. The man listens. Points toward the stairs. Then looks at the suitcase. Then at the guest. He comes around the desk, takes one end of the case, carries it four steps to the foot of the stairs, sets it down, and comes back.

He writes in the book.

A third guest. Something is wrong. The man listens longer this time. He starts to speak, stops, listens again. He looks at the key rack. He looks at the book. He turns back a page. He reads. He looks at the guest.

He goes to the rack and takes down a different key.

The guest hesitates, then takes it.

The man opens the book and writes. He writes for some time.

He sets the pen down.

The lobby is empty.

He straightens the register. He squares the key-rack card. He looks at the door.

A fourth guest enters.

The man reaches for the pen.

It is not there.

He looks at the place where it was.

The guest is speaking.

The man looks up.

He listens. He nods. He goes to the rack, takes down a key, sets it on the counter, and turns it so the number faces the guest.

The guest takes the key and goes.

The man remains behind the desk.

The book is open in front of him.
