Platform

Two trains stand at a station, window to window. In one of them a man is reading. The cup on his table is still and the coffee in it is level.

Two trains stand at a station, window to window. In one of them a man is reading. The cup on his table is still and the coffee in it is level.

The train opposite begins to move. He feels his own carriage slide, and his body braces for the platform to go past. The windows across from him go past instead, one after another, and when the last has gone the platform is there, with a pillar and a clock and a woman holding a bag, all of them where they were.

He checks the cup. Still. The coffee, level.

The pillar decided it. He could see the pillar only once the other train was gone.

His own train left on time.
