The book was face-down on the kitchen counter. She had finished it the night before. In the morning she came downstairs first, made a cup of instant coffee, and sat at the table.
He came in a few minutes later.
“Are you making coffee?”
“No.”
He looked at her cup.
“Instant?”
“Yes.”
Then he looked at the machine.
“Is it broken?”
“No. It works.”
He stood in front of it for a moment.
“Are we out?”
“No. There’s plenty.”
He opened the cabinet anyway.
She drank her coffee.
“Where are the filters?”
“Behind the book.”
He moved the book, still face-down, to the other side of the counter and found the filters.
He checked the water reservoir.
It was empty.
He filled it.
“Where’s the scoop?”
“Second drawer.”
He opened the first.
“The other one.”
He found it.
The machine clicked on.
He waited.
She stayed at the table.
A few minutes later he poured himself a cup.
He took a sip.
It was fine.
She drank.
Hers had gone a little cold.
