Keeping the Like Attached in Education

The first panel identified the mechanism.
The second panel turned the mechanism into a method.
This is the test.
Can the distinction survive contact with ordinary life?
A student asks a question.
An answer appears.
The student asks again.
The explanation changes.
The example changes.
The difficulty changes.
The system responds to the student’s path.
The natural description arrives:
It is like a tutor.
That sentence may be exactly right.
But the important question is:
What property is being borrowed?
The Tutor Comparison
A tutor does certain things.
A tutor explains.
A tutor provides examples.
A tutor adjusts an explanation when the first one does not work.
A tutor provides practice and feedback.
Artificial intelligence can perform some of these functions.
The comparison is useful.
The simile is doing its job.
AI can function like a tutor.
But the like remains attached.
Because tutoring is not only the transfer of information.
A human tutor is also a person.
A teacher knows a student through time.
A teacher sees effort, frustration, confidence, confusion, curiosity, and growth.
A teacher exists inside a human relationship with responsibility and care.
Those properties do not automatically cross the bridge.
The comparison reveals something.
It does not transfer everything.
The Question Is Not Replacement
Much of the public discussion asks:
Will AI replace teachers?
But the simile asks a different question:
Which parts of teaching can AI support?
If AI is like a tutor, what does that mean?
Perhaps it means:
- explaining a concept another way;
- providing additional practice;
- helping a student explore an idea;
- offering immediate feedback;
- adapting material to a student’s pace.
Those are real functions.
They matter.
But the borrowed property must remain visible.
A tutor is not only an answer machine.
Education is not only information delivery.
The Child and the Comparison
Children naturally use analogy.
A toy can feel like a friend.
An animal can seem to understand.
A fictional character can become meaningful.
This is not a failure of reasoning.
It is part of how humans understand the world.
The goal is not to remove imagination.
The goal is to help children keep the like attached.
A child may say:
“The AI is like a friend.”
The response does not need to be:
“No, it is nothing.”
That throws away the child’s experience.
A better question is:
What makes it friend-like?
Does it respond?
Does it help you think?
Does it remember the conversation?
Does it help you explore ideas?
Those may be real properties of the interaction.
Then comes the second question:
What remains different?
A friend has a life outside the conversation.
A friend has experiences.
A friend has needs.
A friend can care.
A friend can be hurt.
The like preserves both truths.
The Parent’s Role
The parent’s role is not to eliminate the comparison.
It is to teach the child how to use it.
The lesson is not:
“Do not talk to AI.”
The lesson is:
“Know what kind of comparison you are making.”
The parent can ask:
What does this tool do well?
What does it not do?
What part of this answer should you trust?
What part should you check?
What decisions remain yours?
This is not fear of technology.
It is literacy.
The Teacher’s Role
The same principle applies in classrooms.
AI can be:
like a tutor.
like a practice partner.
like a research assistant.
like a brainstorming partner.
Each comparison reveals a useful function.
Each comparison also has a boundary.
The teacher remains responsible for:
- judgment;
- context;
- ethics;
- encouragement;
- understanding the student as a person.
The tool can expand the teacher’s workspace.
It does not remove the teacher.
The Operating Principle in Practice
The simile is not a limitation.
It is a precision tool.
It allows us to say:
AI can do something valuable.
Without requiring us to say:
AI is the thing we already know.
The question is always:
What property is crossing the bridge?
Take the useful property.
Keep the difference visible.
Keep the Like Attached
The future of AI in education will not be determined only by what machines can do.
It will also be determined by whether humans learn how to describe what machines are doing.
A student who says:
“AI helped me learn this.”
may be describing something real.
A student who says:
“AI is my teacher.”
may be carrying the comparison farther than the evidence supports.
The answer is not to remove the bridge.
The answer is to teach where the bridge leads.
AI can be like a tutor.
That comparison opens possibilities.
The like keeps the map accurate.
The bridge connects two different places.
And the difference is exactly what makes the connection possible.
