Catch the Moment

The Question

“How are you?” The question came in kitchens, on phone calls, in the quiet moments after someone sat down across from him. “I’m okay.” The answer was true. He was sleeping. He was eating. He was going to work. He was answering messages. Nothing about it was a lie.

“How are you?”

The question came in kitchens, on phone calls, in the quiet moments after someone sat down across from him.

“I’m okay.”

The answer was true.

He was sleeping.
He was eating.
He was going to work.
He was answering messages.

Nothing about it was a lie.

A few days later:

“How are you doing?”

“I’m doing alright.”

They nodded.

Good.

The conversation moved on.

Later, someone else asked:

“How’s everything?”

“Fine.”

Again, the same small pause.

The same nod.

The same relief.

He watched it happen.

He had answered correctly.
