He was sitting on the sofa, scrolling.
Something caught him.
He stopped, went back, read it again.
“Look at this.”
He carried the laptop to the table and sat down beside him.
They worked there for a while.
“Try another.”
A new version appeared.
He read it.
“No.”
Another.
“Closer.”
He leaned forward, one elbow on the table.
“Keep that part. Lose the rest.”
They tried it again.
Then another way.
At some point he laughed.
“That’s terrible.”
They kept going.
A paragraph moved. Then moved back. Something from an earlier version returned in a different place.
He looked up.
The sun was in his eyes.
He shifted in the chair and tried to read again.
“I’m getting something.”
He pushed the laptop away and closed the lid.
He stood and went to the kitchen.
When he came back, he walked around the table and sat on the opposite side.
The sun was behind him now.
He spun the laptop around and opened it.
For a moment, he read.
Then he looked up, smiled, squared his shoulders, and took a breath.
“Okay. Let’s start.”
He looked back at the screen.
“What’s out there to prove me wrong?”
