What the Number Is a Number Of

We may have no idea how many fish there are. There might be forty or four thousand. Fish may be entering and leaving the schools while we watch. Two schools might merge. One might divide.

It sounds precise.

We can stand on a dock, look into the water, and say there are four schools below us. Another person can look and agree.

Four.

None of that prevents four from being exactly right.

We counted schools. Someone else may have thought we were counting fish.

The precision belongs to the unit we used. It does not tell us everything contained within it.

That becomes more interesting when we change where we are standing.

From the dock, a school presents itself as a shape. We see density, direction, coordinated movement. The individual fish disappear into the pattern.

Move closer and the school becomes fish.

Swim among them and even the school may become difficult to perceive. There are fish beside us, beneath us, moving past us. The larger shape that was obvious from the dock may no longer be available to the eye.

The fish have not necessarily changed.

Our position has.

And with it, the useful unit may change.

The same problem appeared in our ships.

A ship seems easier because it has edges. There is a hull, a name painted on it, a registration.

One ship is one ship.

Until we ask what we are trying to know.

A port authority assigning berths counts ships. Passenger service counts seats or passengers; freight may count containers or mass. Traffic counts arrivals and departures. An engineer may care about class.

The physical ship remains where it was.

Its relevance moves.

A round trip makes this particularly visible. We comfortably call it one round trip, though it contains two movements in opposite directions. The return does not erase the departure.

Count completed round trips and the answer is one.

Count departures and the answer is two.

Both numbers can be exact. They answer different questions.

That suggests something important about measurement.

Before we measure, we curate.

We perceive from where we stand, decide what belongs together, draw a boundary around it. Purpose can move that boundary: a school becomes fish, a ship becomes seats, a voyage becomes departures.

Only then do we count.

By the time the number appears, much of the intellectual work has already happened. And because the number is visible while the decisions that produced its unit usually are not, precision can masquerade as completeness.

Four schools of fish is precise. It tells us almost nothing about how many fish are in the water.

Four departures may be precise. It does not tell us whether four ships departed or one ship left four times.

The arithmetic has done nothing wrong.

The number answered the question it was given.
