it could seriously shake up travel plans

Heads‑up: there’s a 24‑hour national rail strike coming up — it could seriously disrupt many train services across Italy and shake up travel plans.

Here’s what’s happening — and what to watch out for:

From 21:00 on Thursday 27 November to 21:00 on Friday 28 November 2025, staff across the national rail system — covering FS Italiane (and its divisions), Trenord, Trenitalia, and Italo — are striking.  This affects long‑distance, high‑speed, interregional, and regional trains — in short: many of the usual rail services might be delayed or cancelled.  Still: “guaranteed” trains will run. Some services — especially during peak travel hours (morning commute, typical travel windows) — are legally mandated, though capacity will likely be tight.  If you plan on travelling during that period: check the official websites (or apps) of the operators for the list of guaranteed trains; keep an eye on station announcements and real‑time updates.

4️⃣ Quick survival instructions (the good part)

1. GUARANTEED SERVICES (The Safe List)

These are the trains protected by Italian law, even during a strike. They almost always run unless there’s a literal emergency.

A. Frecciarossa / Frecciargento / Frecciabianca (High-Speed & Premium)

You can expect:

Early-morning trains (approx 06:00–09:00) Late-afternoon trains (approx 18:00–21:00)

Exact trains vary, but:

Milano ↔ Roma: several guaranteed runs Milano ↔ Venezia (FR 1000 / FR 500 series) Roma ↔ Napoli ↔ Salerno Bologna ↔ Firenze (all HS tunnels have priority)

Your safest bet:

The first train of the morning and the last HS trains of the day.

B. Italo (NTV) Guaranteed Line

Italo also publishes a list of “servizi garantiti.”

Typically preserved:

Italo Milano–Roma–Napoli morning/early evening runs Italo Venezia–Bologna–Firenze–Roma partial service Italo Torino–Milano–Reggio Emilia–Bologna limited

Italo tends to maintain at least one train every few hours on their core routes.

C. Regional Trains — Only during commuter protection windows

These windows are always guaranteed:

06:00–09:00

Consult your apps.
