A short rest, a sweet reprieve,
A slumber light, a world to leave.
The sun descends, a gentle haze,
A nap awaits, in peaceful daze. (1)

The term cat nap (sometimes written as catnap or cat-nap) is a metaphoric expression used for over 200 years.

Cats sleep long periods at a time, so it may seem strange to call a short period of sleep during the day a catnap. Some researchers say it started in Ancient Egypt when cats were sacred and Pharaohs began to emulate how cats sleep.

The metaphor has gained recent popularity as a way to describe a short nap or short periods of rest between 20 and 45 minutes or less that can rejuvenate your mind and body. People often refer to the phrase by another common name: power nap.

A typical dog nap can take 30 minutes to a couple of hours. Adult dogs often take two to four naps during the day. Puppies may nap longer, with older puppies averaging around 3.5 hours of naps throughout the day. (2)
