We let others in on our experiences because we want to share what we’ve done, put it out there for them to take what resonates within for their benefit, not ours. This type of testimony cultivates courage and resilience. The strength it takes to give voice to our experiences fosters connections with others, but when we say or do something for the world to like us, it’s seeking approval and self-satisfaction. The need for validation from others, the intense desire to win the acceptance of those around us and avoid feelings of rejection is self-serving.
During a recent walk, I felt the urge to post a picture on social media. It was unique: the view, the experience of gratitude, and the knowledge of where I was. I also knew it would be difficult for others to fathom the moment’s delight and realized only I knew what I felt, what the minutes meant. I was the one who mattered and who needed to know.
