It is referred to as the Intracoastal Waterway and not the Intercoastal Waterway for a reason. The term “intra” means within, while “inter” means between. Since the waterway runs along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts instead of equally between two coasts, intracoastal is a better term.

The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (Sandy Hook to Manasquan Inlet) is a commercial waterway and is part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. It runs for 27.47 miles south from Sandy Hook Point to Manasquan Inlet.

From Manasquan Inlet, the New Jersey Intracoastal Waterway follows the dredged channel in Manasquan River at Manasquan Inlet, to Mile 2.7, turning south into the Point Pleasant Canal and onward to the Delaware Bay, about 3 miles north of Cape May Point.

The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a 3,000-mile (4,800 km) inland waterway along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts of the United States, running from Massachusetts southward along the Atlantic Seaboard and around the southern tip of Florida, then following the Gulf Coast to Brownsville, Texas.

Florida Inland option. The Okeechobee Waterway or Okeechobee Canal is a relatively shallow artificial waterway in the United States, stretching across Florida from Fort Myers on the west coast to Stuarton Florida’s east coast. The waterway can support tows such as barges or private vessels up to 50 feet (15 metres) wide x 250 feet (76 metres) long which draw less than 10 feet (3.0 metres),[2] as parts of the system, especially the locks may have low water depths of just ten feet.[2] The system of channels runs through Lake Okeechobee and consists of the Caloosahatchee River to the west of the lake and the St. Lucie Canal east of the lake.[1]

The Gulf Intracoastal Waterway(GIWW[1]) is the portion of the Intracoastal Waterway located along the Gulf Coast of the United States. It is a navigable inland waterway running approximately 1,300 mi (2,100 km)[1]from Saint Marks, Florida, to Brownsville, Texas.
