Aircraft Position at Sunrise – The North Pole

A polar route is an aircraft route across the uninhabited polar ice cap regions. The term “polar route” was originally applied to great circle navigation routes between Europe and the west coast of North America in the 1950s.

A Great Circle Route is the shortest course between two points on the surface of a sphere. It lies in a plane that intersects the sphere’s centre and was known by mathematicians before the time of Columbus.

Between continents, airplanes follow “Great Circle”Routes,” accounting for the earth’s curvature and Arctic Polar Routes are now common on airlines connecting Asian cities to North European cities.
